Mural on a parking garage that says "Hattiesburg" with arrows pointing to nearby towns. A quote "It is the Hattiesburg spirit to go after things and to get them especially large things."
A cute mural I saw while we were at Ink in the Alley.

3 Accomplishments

  1. I digitized a few images in the digilab this week. It was fun to get some hands-on experience.

  2. I transcribed a letter in CWRGM.

  3. I finished my introduction! I will likely end up rewriting parts of it as I continue on in my project, but the main draft is complete.

3 Things Preventing My Best Work

  1. I have never written an introduction in this style before, with each section broken up, so it was a bit of a learning curve.

  2. I did not understand why we were building a chatbot. I understand it is to learn new ways of seeing the data, but I believe learning basic programming, or how to use sites like Constellate would be more directly beneficial to research.

  3. Myself, along with half of the REU, had another team-bonding experience on the side of the road when Audrey's car broke down.

3 Things I Learned This Week

  1. I learned how to utilize QGIS in mapping letters and census data. I also learned how to generate statistics using the program.

  2. I learned how the digitization process works, with hands-on experience.

  3. I learned more about how data is viewed and used in different disciplines.

Next Action Step:

I will begin to write my literature review in this next week. I have most of my secondary sources pulled already, but I need to put them together and actually write the review.
